THEATRE GROUPS LOOKING FOR SPACE<\/span><\/p>\n

The Telakka project started as an idea in 1993. There were professional theatre groups in Tampere, none of whom had a permanent performance and rehearsal space. Each group received their own grants from the state, the county, the city and wherever. Most of the money and energy was always spent on marketing and\/or launching a new space. In Tampere, it was difficult to get the audience to find all different spaces where performances were held.<\/p>\n

We pooled our resources and started looking for a shared space. We found some potential ones, but for various reasons reason we always missed those. In 1994, we found an old empty warehouse building in the center of Tampere, owned by the construction company YIT. We held negotiations with them, presented our plans, dreams and calculations. Finally, we signed a temporary lease in January 1996.<\/p>\n

It was winter and the space was freezing cold when we started rehearsing the first play. At this point, the group had formed from three professional theater groups; MOTELLI SKRONKLE, MORAALIA THEATER, AND GROUP FAGERHOLM. The merger was named TELAKKA. The plans were to have the first premiere in the spring of 1996.<\/p>\n

VOLUNTEER WORK FOR A CULTURE HOUSE<\/span><\/p>\n

The play was rehearsed on the first and third floors of the house, depending on the vision. The third floor would have been the best option for the play, but due to fire safety and other issues, the rehearsals had to be moved to the first floor. Other problems like this piled up and we started thinking about the future and our ability to keep the house in our possession so that we could prepare performances on the third floor. We were afraid that after the first play we would be left penniless anyway and the situation would be the same as before. We had already dreamed of renovating the house and the idea came up to rebuild all the floors. We decided to build a summer restaurant on the first floor which could finance the construction of the space as a theater.<\/p>\n

The restaurant and the terrace built outside the house (as a volunteer effort) opened on May 17, 1996 with temporary summer restaurant permits. \u201cThe money to buy the first warehouse was borrowed and we started learning how to serve. When we started building, there were seven of us and by August the number of volunteers had already exceeded thirty. Since we didn\u2019t have any money, we brought all the furniture and tablecloths etc. from our homes and we also received some donations. All the construction was done from beggared waste wood etc. materials. To our surprise, the restaurant became a success. The summer went by while we served and at the same time we built other floors as finances allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n

CULTURE HOUSE TELAKKA<\/span><\/p>\n

We had to install staff facilities, restrooms, a heating system, air conditioning, a sprinkler system, plumbing and sewage connections, and a sauna\u2014in other words, completely rebuild the building's interior. The renovation work took place throughout the winter of 1996\u201397. We sourced materials by, for instance, dismantling old barns and log cabins and scrounging scrap lumber from various construction sites. Our goal was to create a building that reflected both the nature of the warehouse and our own personalities, while relying more on imagination than money.<\/p>\n

During the construction, we also made financing and management plans, which resulted in us obtaining a loan to complete the renovation. At the same time, we negotiated with the YIT Corporation about the possibility of acquiring the property.<\/p>\n

We had been paying rent since the fall of 1996, but we came to a situation where we would either buy the house or pay the current rent. The negotiations ended with the sale deed being signed on May Day Eve 1997. On May Day Eve we reopened the terrace and the 1st floor. Construction continued on the other floors. The volunteer labor force had thinned out during the winter, but the most tenacious guerrillas continued.<\/p>\n

The second floor of the building was inspected in June, where office space, toilets, a theatre dressing room, a sauna and a gallery\/private restaurant were completed. The third floor of the building was inspected in August, just before the theatre summer week.<\/p>\n

The final inspection of the entire house was done on November 14, 1997.<\/p>\n

The renovation was carried out without support from the city of Tampere or the state and was mostly done as volunteer work.<\/p>\n

Alongside the renovation and running the restaurant, we produced a diverse program; performing ourselves and getting interesting guests. During the renovation, the program focused on the restaurant, but as soon as the theater space was completed, theater, dance, and film performances were directed there. The first premiere was on December 8, 1997.<\/p>\n

Currently, the house employs 25 people permanently.<\/p>\n

A large number of other people are employed through projects such as bands, film projects and events. Telakka has developed into a nationally and internationally recognized cultural center.<\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that the house operates mostly without public support, with the exception of subsidies and project grants received for the theater.<\/p>\n

The operating principle is that any income from the restaurant is directed towards creating theater and independent culture.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
